Chambersburg Reads Inspires in November

Chambersburg Reads to Inspire Service winds up in November with a Catch a Volunteer photography display, a showing of “The Blind Side” movie, a Volunteer Opportunities Fair, and The Conococheague Players visiting Chambersburg Area School District elementary schools to present Greg Mortenson’s, Listen to the Wind, based on a school-building project in the Middle East.

“Caught in the Act” photographs and art of volunteers in action are on display in the Grove Family Library art gallery through the end of November. Framed additions are welcome to the collection. If you have a framed work of a volunteer in action to display, contact Bernice Crouse at (717) 709-0282 ext. 212.

On Thursday, November 11, at 7:00 p.m., The Blind Side movie is showing on the big screen at Capitol Theatre for FREE. The movie will be introduced at 6:45 p.m. by a performance of Chambersburg H.Y.P.E, a local student hip-hop team. A discussion of mentoring opportunities in Franklin County will follow the movie. Door prizes are included. Sponsors include Healthy Communities Partnership, The Capitol Theatre Center, Cumberland Valley School of Music, Reach! of Carlisle, and Chambersburg Reads.

On Saturday, November 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Chambersburg Reads is hosting a Volunteer Opportunities Fair at the Chambersburg Mall. Nonprofit organizations are welcome to contact Bernice Crouse to request a free table to recruit volunteers for their work in the community. All organizations must submit proof of insurance. The “Fair” will also offer musical and dance entertainment by Cumberland Valley School of Music and the Shippensburg University Step Team. There will be brief presentations by at least 6 community organizations between the musical performances. Sponsors for this event include Chambersburg Mall, Cumberland Valley School of Music, Shippensburg Step Team, and Chambersburg Reads.

During the month of November, The Conococheague Players are visiting selected classes in elementary schools in Chambersburg Area School District to present a readers’ theatre version of “Listen to the Wind”, the picture book version of Greg Mortenson’s school-building project in the Middle East. The presentations will be used as a springboard for student reading and writing projects in the classroom. This program is sponsored by the Rotary Foundation of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania Humanities Council, Chambersburg Area School District, and Chambersburg Reads.
