A Home Tour Too Good to Miss!


June Home Tour Benefits Chambersburg Libraries

Tour Books are available now for the annual Home Tour that benefits the Coyle Free and Grove Family Library Building Funds.  The tour date is Sunday, June 3, 2010, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Visit historic homes on Philadelphia Ave., new construction in Maple Run, an in-town garden, a classic farm-style house in the city and a home with a panoramic view of the countryside.  Get your booklets now at Coyle or Grove Libraries for just $20 each.  Thanks to our printing sponsor Graphics Universal, all proceeds go to the libraries!

House #1) The Sheep Home                                                       862 Philadelphia Avenue
This Queen Anne style home in the north end of Chambersburg was built in 1880’s  by Dr. George Hull.  Presently owned by Dr. Robert and Diane Sheep, some of the home highlights include a circular turret, a stained glass window and a wrap-around porch.

House #2) The Schiwek Home                                                   662 Philadelphia Avenue
This home was built prior to 1930 for William Hoerner, a widower.  It has also housed two prior Deans of Wilson College.  Of special note in this two story brick home with a slate roof is a significant art collection and over 2000 books.

House #3) Bowers Home                                                                             169 Tobin Drive
This Maple Run duplex, owned by the Bowers sits on a large lot and has a sunroom.  Home highlights include international décor and a basement with a surprise: a magic show!

House #4) The Smith Home                                                                        1055 Lincoln Way East
The home of Rick and Joan Smith also houses two businesses:  the Inside Out salon and the Hot Java coffee shop.  Since purchasing the home in 2002, much remodeling and landscaping has transformed the property.   The home’s garden offers a delightful atmosphere to enjoy outdoor live music offered over the summer.   

House #5) The O’Connor Home                                                                523 Guilford Avenue
The O’Connor Home is over 100 years old and was originally built by George Geyer Sr., who owned Geyer Lumber.  He and his wife lived in the house for 70 years.  The home has also been previously owned by Chambersburg mayor Pete and his wife Kay Lagiovane.  This classic Americana “farm” style house has a large country kitchen, a winter garden, and an extensive collection of art and books.

House #6) The Diller Home                                                                       3674 Pampas Circle
The Diller home, off Falling Spring Road, was built on 3.5 acres.  Views from the home capture a panoramic view of the countryside.  Of special interest is the home’s large foyer and cozy family room.

Franklin-Fulton Reads From Here to There...Coming September 8

Conococheague Players, Lincoln Highway Association.  Franklin County LEARN and Healthy Communities partners, schools, and libraries are developing activities for families with children of all ages.  Additional featured books include Richard Paul Evans' series "The Walk" (now 3 titles long), nonfiction books about Lincoln Highway, the Appalachian Trail, and Forbes Road, Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer for teens, Country Crossing by Jim Ayelsworth and many other great titles for children.

Author Peter Troy Coming to Coyle Free Library

Coyle Free Library and its book club welcome Peter Troy as he presents his debut novel May the Road Rise Up To Meet You at Coyle Free Library at Main Street in Chambersburg on May 15, at 6 pm.   Troy will be joining the Coyle Free Library Book Club to read an excerpt from his book and to discuss the novel. 

May the Road Rise Up to Meet You was published in February 2012 by Doubleday.  The novel is a passionate and deeply absorbing American epic told from four distinct perspectives, two immigrants and two slaves, amidst the backdrop of the Irish Famine, the Abolitionist Movement and the Civil War. There are several scenes in the novel pertinent to Chambersburg and the surrounding area.

Peter Troy is a former journalist and high school history teacher.  He lives in New York State where he is currently at work on the second book in a trilogy that will span one hundred sixty years of American history when it is completed.

Grover's Den Grand Opening

On Friday, April 27th, Grover’s Den officially opened at Grove Family Library on Ragged Edge Road in Chambersburg.  In attendance at the grand opening for the ribbon cutting was Representative Rob Kauffman, several of the Grover’s Den planning committee volunteers, and staff.

Grover’s Den is a comfortable area within the library designated for those over the age of 55 to sit down, relax, sip coffee, read large print books, meet new people, research subjects of special interest on a large screen monitor.

In conjunction with the Den, several programs have been implemented geared toward seniors.
